We are continually amazed at how our community steps up to support our mission. Since 2009, we have navigated hurricanes, floods, economic fluctuations, a pandemic and now a derecho (those high winds that blasted Houston in May). Through it all, we have come together to serve our neighbors in need.
Our immediate community was hard hit with hundreds of trees down and power out for days. Thankfully, the Pantry survived, our power stayed on, and we served our clients without disruption. While many of our volunteers were still without power and dealing with damage to their homes, they showed up to help our neighbors. With no power, many Houstonians tossed all food from their refrigerators and freezers, so the need was even greater than usual. We were happy to assist during this challenging time and thankful for our community’s unwavering commitment.
From January through May 2024:
We served 3,920 families, a 15% increase over 2023
20% of our clients were new to us–two distributions in May included more than 30% new clients.
We provided food to an average of 186 families each week
Even with wild weather and unexpected challenges, food insecurity doesn’t take a vacation. For many clients, the need increases during the summer because children are not getting meals at school. We welcome donations of non-perishable food and funds year-round, and we need volunteers five days a week in every season to serve our community. We wish you a wonderful summer, and hope that you will remember to support the Pantry. We know that we can count on you!
