Celebrating our volunteers:  seven years of service

On June 25, we celebrated our volunteers at an appreciation luncheon that highlighted the 28,841 hours of service people have given since the pantry opened on June 25, 2009.  Service highlights included:

  • Joe Gonzalez served 2,546 hours of welcoming people to the pantry
  • Jennifer Moffett served 2,155 hours interviewing and overseeing senior meal delivery
  • Bobby Andrade served 1,994 hours helping folks with fresh produce and stocking shelves and
  • Charlie Vasquez served 1,736 hours being the rock solid foundation and backbone of the pantry – he pretty much anything that is asked of him!

It takes a village to operate the pantry. The volunteers are priceless and take great joy in serving.

How many lives have been impacted in our own neighborhood?

As of May 31, we have served 6,173 individuals at the pantry this year.  Since the pantry’s inception in 2009, the pantry has served 106,357 individuals.

The pantry sure could use…

  • Boxed, shelf stable milk (it’s liquid, not powder)
  • Cans of fruit and soup
  • Canned meat
  • Soap and other hygiene items

Drop off nonperishable food items any time at the Feed Frank donation box on the pantry parking lot.

An extreme case of giving!

Trey Rice and his wife, Sara, have started extreme couponing for the benefit of the food pantry. They recently dropped off 8 bottles of Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce, 16 boxes of various Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper and 24 boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios.  The total retail cost before coupons was $113 but after store and manufacturer coupons, the final cash outlay was $35 (about 68% savings).  If you’d like to help Trey and Sara, they could use more  coupons.  Please drop off the Smart Source, Red Plum and Proctor & Gamble inserts from your Sunday paper at the pantry and Trey and Sara will put them to good use!

Meet the fruit and veggie man:  Bobby Andrade

“Jalepenos?”  Bobby Andrade wants to make sure you want all of the fruit and vegetables he is doling out.  “Some people like onions.  Some people don’t.”  Bobby is one of our most senior volunteers and one of our most reliable.  You will see him perched behind the boxes of seasonal produce almost every Thursday night and Saturday morning.  He is fastidious about washing his hands when handling the produce!  Bobby first noticed people standing in line at the pantry in 2009, and he immediately wanted to volunteer.  He and his family have been a part of Christ the King Catholic Church for more than 45 years. The apple of his eye is his great-granddaughter, Melody, pictured with him.  He’s teaching her Spanish, knowing that proficiency in several languages will be an asset when she grows up.
