NEWS FROM THE PANTRY

Annual Pantry Rummage Sale this week:

Donate items, come shop Thursday-Saturday
The HIM Food Pantry Annual Rummage Sale will be held this week for THREE days:  Preview on Thursday, November 3 from 4-7 p.m.; Friday, November 4 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Saturday, November 5 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the pantry.  This huge sale includes furniture, clothing of every size, baby items, sporting gear, household items, electronics, books and more.  Do some last-minute closet cleaning and drop off donations at the pantry at 3523 Beauchamp on Wednesday during sale setup, during the actual sale or you may email [email protected] or call (713) 447-7624 to discuss other arrangements.  Come shop for some great bargains!

Help clients Christmas shop for their children

On Saturday, December 3, we will open our rummage sale storage shed on the pantry’s grounds to our clients so they can “Christmas shop” for their children for free.  Donations of gently used toys and children’s clothing in good condition are needed.  Just drop them off at the pantry on Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings or in the Feed Frank donation box at any time.  You may email [email protected] or call (713) 447-7624 to discuss other arrangements.

Make a delicious difference for a family during the holidays

Got an extra turkey or ham?  We try to provide turkeys and hams during the holidays for our clients.  If you have an extra one or extra turkey bucks from local grocery stores that you can donate, you will help families have a great holiday.

The pantry sure could use…

  • Boxed, shelf stable milk (it’s liquid, not powder)
  • Cans of fruit and soup
  • Canned meat
  • Soap and other hygiene items

Drop off nonperishable food items any time at the Feed Frank donation box on the pantry parking lot.

Immanuel Lutheran logo competition incorporates pantry logo

As part of its back-to-school preparation, Immanuel Lutheran’s Early Childhood Education School held a contest among the teachers to decorate donation boxes for the school’s diaper drive for the pantry.  Their Diaper Challenge had a goal of 5,000 diapers.  One of the rules of the contest was that the HIM pantry logo had to be incorporated into every box. One of the teachers, Heidi Luker, inspired by the colorful logo on the pantry’s building, turned her entire box into the logo complete with her class’ mascot, the elephant.  It won first place, and the challenge netted 8,000 diapers for the pantry.  Thank you, Immanuel Lutheran!

Thanks for all the key stokes, Sharon!

The talents of many volunteers–often unseen–make our pantry hum, and one of our most dedicated volunteers, Sharon Sawallisch, has dutifully entered clients’ information every week into our database since the pantry’s opening in 2009.  We use this information to run reports for our member churches, the Board of Directors meetings and the Houston Food Bank, our largest partner agency.  Sharon is turning over the data input reins to another volunteer (thank you, Emer O’Sullivan!) so we thank you, Sharon, for your six years of devoted service to the pantry.

Raffle winner donates beautiful cross to raise funds for pantry

Zion Lutheran member Keith Ullrich recently won a silver and amber crystal cross necklace in a raffle.  He generously donated the lovely necklace to the pantry for our rummage sale.  Before the cross could make it across the street to the pantry, another Zion member, Alice Walker, snapped it up and made a generous donation to the pantry.  We love instant transactions like that.  Thanks to you both!

Pantry benefits from generous bequest

When their aunt, Evarista “Rusty” Bilski, passed away in September, her nieces decided to donate the entire contents of Aunt Rusty’s apartment to our annual rummage sale.  The items from the two-bedroom apartment will provide much needed resources for the pantry, and we are grateful for this generous contribution.

Meet Ben and Mary Alba:  Dedicated volunteers who inspire us

Several years ago we were in desperate need of someone to pick up the weekly order of fruit and vegetables for the pantry.  Ben and Mary Alba, members of Christ the King Catholic Church, answered the call, and they are a perfect fit.  They are bilingual, have a flexible time schedule and are consistently reliable.  Over time, they have built wonderful working relationships with the fruit and vegetable vendors behind Canino’s to get the most and best produce each week for our clients.  In addition, they stop and pick up eggs at the market when we need them.  You will also see Ben at Christ the King taking care of the yard, tending to the altar flowers and even powerwashing the church!  We appreciate Ben and Mary’s dedication every week.

Celebrating our volunteers:  seven years of service

On June 25, we celebrated our volunteers at an appreciation luncheon that highlighted the 28,841 hours of service people have given since the pantry opened on June 25, 2009.  Service highlights included:

  • Joe Gonzalez served 2,546 hours of welcoming people to the pantry
  • Jennifer Moffett served 2,155 hours interviewing and overseeing senior meal delivery
  • Bobby Andrade served 1,994 hours helping folks with fresh produce and stocking shelves and
  • Charlie Vasquez served 1,736 hours being the rock solid foundation and backbone of the pantry – he pretty much anything that is asked of him!

It takes a village to operate the pantry. The volunteers are priceless and take great joy in serving.

How many lives have been impacted in our own neighborhood?

As of May 31, we have served 6,173 individuals at the pantry this year.  Since the pantry’s inception in 2009, the pantry has served 106,357 individuals.

The pantry sure could use…

  • Boxed, shelf stable milk (it’s liquid, not powder)
  • Cans of fruit and soup
  • Canned meat
  • Soap and other hygiene items

Drop off nonperishable food items any time at the Feed Frank donation box on the pantry parking lot.

An extreme case of giving!

Trey Rice and his wife, Sara, have started extreme couponing for the benefit of the food pantry. They recently dropped off 8 bottles of Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ Sauce, 16 boxes of various Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper and 24 boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios.  The total retail cost before coupons was $113 but after store and manufacturer coupons, the final cash outlay was $35 (about 68% savings).  If you’d like to help Trey and Sara, they could use more  coupons.  Please drop off the Smart Source, Red Plum and Proctor & Gamble inserts from your Sunday paper at the pantry and Trey and Sara will put them to good use!

Meet the fruit and veggie man:  Bobby Andrade

“Jalepenos?”  Bobby Andrade wants to make sure you want all of the fruit and vegetables he is doling out.  “Some people like onions.  Some people don’t.”  Bobby is one of our most senior volunteers and one of our most reliable.  You will see him perched behind the boxes of seasonal produce almost every Thursday night and Saturday morning.  He is fastidious about washing his hands when handling the produce!  Bobby first noticed people standing in line at the pantry in 2009, and he immediately wanted to volunteer.  He and his family have been a part of Christ the King Catholic Church for more than 45 years. The apple of his eye is his great-granddaughter, Melody, pictured with him.  He’s teaching her Spanish, knowing that proficiency in several languages will be an asset when she grows up.
