NEWS FROM THE PANTRY

Share the Spirit!

During this season of thanksgiving and joy, we hope that you will consider including the pantry in your giving.  It is easy to donate securely:  by credit card through our website (www.himfoodpantry.org), by direct payment through the app Venmo and by check mailed to the address below.  One dollar allows us to buy almost five pounds of food through our partnering agency, The Houston Food Bank.  We will appreciate any amount and thanks for sharing the spirit of the season!

Drop off clothes/toys for Client Shopping Day December 12….

On Saturday, December 12, we will open our rummage sale storage shed on the pantry’s grounds to our clients to allow them to “Christmas shop” for free.  Donations of gently used clothing, household goods and toys in good condition are needed.  Just drop them off at the pantry on Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings or in the Feed Frank donation box at any time.

Sixth Annual Stock the Pantry Party delivers a truckload….

A big thank you to Elizabeth McCormick who held her sixth annual “Stock the Pantry Party” at the Karbach Brewery in October to benefit the HIM Food Pantry.  Elizabeth, a regular volunteer from St. Andrew’s, hosts the party each year for her friends, and she delivered a pickup truck full of nonperishable food items to the pantry.  We are so appreciative of her creative (and festive!) approach to giving.

How many lives have been impacted in our own neighborhood?

As of October 31, we have served 12,734 individuals at the pantry this year.  Since the pantry’s inception in 2009, the pantry has served 97,665 individuals to date.

The pantry sure could use…

  • Boxed, shelf stable milk (it’s liquid, not powder)
  • Cans of fruit, soup and canned meat
  • Pasta and spaghetti sauce
  • Diapers in size 3 or 4

Drop off nonperishable food items any time at the Feed Frank donation box on the pantry parking lot.

Did you know that the pantry is run entirely by volunteers?

Not a single dime does towards a salary at the pantry.  So far this year, 437 people have donated more than 5,000 hours of their time to serve our clients.  Volunteer activities include ordering food from the Houston Food Bank (HFB), shopping for other items not available through the HFB, unloading pallets of food, stocking shelves, organizing volunteers, interviewing clients, filling orders, entering information into our database, cleaning the pantry, planning fundraisers like the annual rummage sale and Bean Bash, and overseeing special projects like the remodeling of the kitchen.  Many of our volunteers come several times a week to help.  They are the backbone of this ministry.  Thank you all!

Save the dates: Fourth Annual rummage sale on March 4 and 5

Mark your calendars for our annual rummage sale on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5.  We will need help setting up all day on Thursday, March 3.  We will appreciate donations of rummage in January and February.  Furniture, clothes, shoes, household goods, sporting equipment and toys are needed.`

SummerhouseMeet our fabulous volunteers from The Summerhouse…

Several times a week, volunteers from The Summerhouse swing by the pantry and unload the Feed Frank donation box, restock the shelves and help with various projects at the pantry.  These young adults are a reliable group who take pride in serving their community, and they always do an awesome job.  The Summerhouse is a transition center that helps young adults with intellectual disabilities foster life skills, functional academics, social and emotional skills, and vocational training.  We love having their help!

Want to volunteer? It’s easy with Signup Genius…

We need volunteers each week on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.  From time-to-time we have special events when we also need helping hands.  Many students and others come to the pantry to fulfill their service hour commitments. Check out the volunteer opportunities and sign up to help through Signup Genius.
