The Heights Interfaith Ministries Food Pantry celebrates it’s 6th birthday. This interfaith food pantry located close to downtown provides nutritious groceries, eggs, meat, and fresh produce to neighbors in need each month in the 77007, 77008, 77009, and 77022 zip codes. The pantry is open on Thursday evenings from five to seven and on Saturday mornings from 10 am until noon.
The pantry partners with The Houston Food Bank and gets about 80% of its food from them at a cost of 18 cents per pound. The balance of its food comes from the community. Ninety-five percent of every dollar that is donated goes toward the purchase of food for clients. Nonperishable food items can be donated anytime of the day at the pantry in the Feed Frank donation box.
The food pantry is run 100% by volunteers. The volunteers are GOLD to the Heights Interfaith Ministries Food Pantry. The volunteers have served over 92,000 individuals and delivered weekly meals to 20 homebound seniors. Tonight we would like to honor five volunteers who have gone above and beyond in the 6 years we have been open. They are Bobby Andrade with 1,722 hours, Alice Bongers with 2,528 hours, Joe Gonzales with 2,252 hours, Jennifer Moffett with 1,791 hours and Charlie Vasquez with 1,243 hours. Combined, their hours total 9,536. In 6 years, all of the volunteers at the food pantry have donated a total of 21,945 hours. The youngest volunteer is 4 years old and the oldest is 89.
We celebrate the contributions of the volunteers and the many people who contribute to the pantry. The pantry fights hunger one person at a time. Help end hunger. Your donations of groceries, dollars, or time would be greatly appreciated.
